Cockroaches are among the most undesirable household pests. Their adaptability and rapid reproduction make them difficult to eliminate, so prevention is essential. Learn how they enter an apartment and how to prevent them from becoming established.
Seeing a cockroach indoors is often a sign that a larger population may be hiding nearby. Cockroaches are not merely unpleasant to look at. They may also carry bacteria, allergens and particles of faecal matter that can pose a risk to human health. Because they reproduce quickly and hide extremely well, early detection and effective cockroach control are essential for maintaining hygiene and safety in the home.
Many people assume that cockroaches simply appear, but in reality we often bring them in or unintentionally provide them with a route indoors. Understanding how they enter the home can help keep them outside, prevent an infestation and avoid the unpleasant experience of finding one on the kitchen worktop or even in the bedroom.
Their flattened bodies allow cockroaches to squeeze through extremely narrow openings. A gap of approximately 1.5 mm may be sufficient. They most commonly enter through cracks in walls and floors, openings around plumbing and other service installations, and poorly sealed door and window frames. Because they frequently inhabit sewer pipes and drains, they may also enter living areas through traps and drainage systems.
Regular drain cleaning and the use of protective screens and non-return valves can reduce the risk of entry.
Cockroaches can be brought into the home in cardboard boxes, packaging, shopping bags, second-hand furniture and other objects stored in infested premises. Eggs and developing stages may be hidden in cracks, cardboard folds and other hard-to-see locations, making them easy to miss during a superficial inspection.

In multi-residential buildings, cockroaches can spread rapidly from one apartment to another through plumbing and heating systems, ventilation shafts and installation openings. Ventilation grilles, air vents and shafts are frequently overlooked entry routes. Cockroaches can move through ventilation systems between rooms or even apartments, eventually reaching kitchens, bathrooms and other warm, humid areas that provide favourable conditions for survival.
