In recent years, the Asian tiger mosquito has become one of the most irritating companions of summer. Its adaptability has allowed it to spread across many European countries. Its bites are unpleasant and itchy, so recognising its presence and acting in time are essential for protection.
The Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) is a small mosquito that often flies quietly, so its bite may be noticed only after intense itching begins. Adults measure up to approximately 1 cm. They are dark in colour, with characteristic white bands on the legs and a distinct white stripe running along the centre of the thorax.
The species originates from South-East Asia and spread into Europe mainly through the transport of used tyres and ornamental plants containing standing water with larvae or eggs. It was first recorded in Europe in 1979 and has since spread rapidly through many countries in Southern and Central Europe, supported by favourable climatic conditions.
International traffic and the transport of adult mosquitoes in cars, lorries and other vehicles continue to accelerate its spread.
Asian tiger mosquito larvae develop in small amounts of standing water. They may be found in puddles, discarded tyres, gutters, rainwater barrels, plant saucers, vases and other water-holding containers.
After a blood meal, females lay their eggs just above the waterline. A female may lay many hundreds of eggs during a lifespan of more than a month. The eggs can survive dry conditions for over a year and hatch within days after coming into contact with water.
The larvae feed on bacteria, algae and other microorganisms. In warm water they develop very quickly and may reach adulthood in less than a week.
Unlike many common mosquitoes, Asian tiger mosquitoes are also active during the day. Their activity is usually highest early in the morning and in the late afternoon or around dusk. Males and females feed on floral nectar, while females also require blood from people or other warm-blooded animals for egg development.

In 2007, Italy experienced a significant outbreak of chikungunya fever involving more than 300 people. Epidemiological investigations identified the Asian tiger mosquito as the principal vector.
The most important preventive measure is to eliminate every place where water can collect. Clean gutters regularly, cover rainwater tanks and remove plant saucers, empty containers and other objects in which water accumulates.
