How to Protect Your Home and Surroundings Effectively Against Mosquitoes

Warm summer temperatures bring pleasant weather but also increased activity from mosquitoes and other insects. Their bites are unpleasant and itchy, so timely protection is important for enjoying the outdoors without unnecessary discomfort.

Effective mosquito protection requires two complementary approaches: protecting yourself against bites and reducing opportunities for mosquitoes to breed nearby. By removing standing water, using repellents and applying other preventive measures, you can considerably reduce mosquito activity and enjoy your home and outdoor spaces more comfortably.

Climate change and increasing international movement are helping different pests and disease vectors spread into new areas. One of the most widespread and troublesome invasive mosquitoes in Slovenia is the Asian tiger mosquito, which originates from South-East Asia and is believed to have spread internationally mainly through transport and freight. Around 30 mosquito species are present in Slovenia, with the Asian tiger mosquito among the most noticeable nuisance species.

Common Mosquito (Culex pipiens)

The common mosquito is most active from dusk to dawn and is frequently found around homes, gardens and other residential areas. Its bites can cause itching, redness, swelling and local skin irritation, which may persist for several hours or even days. In some regions, Culex mosquitoes can also transmit pathogens, including West Nile virus, making effective mosquito prevention and protection especially important.

Asian Tiger Mosquito (Aedes albopictus)

The Asian tiger mosquito is easily recognized by its black-and-white striped body and legs. Unlike many other mosquitoes, it is highly active during the day and can be very aggressive. Its bites often cause intense itching, redness and swelling. More importantly, it is a potential vector of diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika virus.

Female mosquitoes need protein from a blood meal to develop their eggs. They locate potential hosts through complex chemical and sensory receptors that detect exhaled carbon dioxide, moisture, body temperature and body odours. Native species are generally more active in the evening, while invasive species such as the Asian tiger mosquito are active during the day. Asian tiger mosquitoes are also quieter in flight than many common mosquitoes, making them harder to notice before they bite.

What Do We Know About Mosquitoes?

  • Females usually lay eggs on or close to water.
  • Larvae may hatch within approximately 48 hours under suitable conditions.
  • Larvae feed mainly on microorganisms.
  • Their development is strongly influenced by environmental temperature.
  • The lifespan of many common mosquito species is approximately one month.
  • Most mosquitoes are active at night or around dusk and rest in sheltered places during the day; the Asian tiger mosquito is an important daytime-biting exception.
  • Mosquitoes are generally weak fliers and often remain within a few hundred metres of the water in which they developed.
  • Some species survive winter in the egg stage.

Common Mosquito Habitats

Mosquitoes are generally weak fliers. Many species remain within approximately 200 metres of their breeding site, although Asian tiger mosquitoes may travel somewhat farther. Females usually remain relatively close to the water in which they lay their eggs. Only female mosquitoes bite.

  1. In natural environments, mosquitoes are most commonly found close to water. Larvae can often be seen in stagnant water, where they repeatedly rise towards the surface to breathe.
  2. Adult mosquitoes feed primarily on flower nectar, making gardens attractive habitats. Females additionally need blood during egg production. They can detect people through exhaled carbon dioxide, movement and body heat from a considerable distance. Eggs and larvae need standing or very slowly moving water for several days. Even a small puddle may be sufficient for a new generation to develop.
  3. Garden containers used to collect rainwater or store irrigation water can become highly productive breeding sites. Unlike natural ponds, these containers may contain few predators such as aquatic insects, tadpoles or newts, allowing mosquito larvae to multiply rapidly. Cover water-storage containers after use. Asian tiger mosquitoes require only a very small amount of water; even a bottle cap or water in a plant saucer may be sufficient.

Mosquitoes are most effectively managed by combining rapid control of adult insects with long-lasting protection of the places where they rest.

Step 1: Rapidly Control Adult Mosquitoes

For immediate control, use Effect Universal Insecticide Aerosol.

The aerosol is ready to use and provides rapid contact action. Treat the room where mosquitoes are present, paying particular attention to:

  • curtains,
  • room corners,
  • areas around windows and doors,
  • spaces behind furniture,
  • other places where mosquitoes rest during the day.

After treatment, leave the room for the period stated in the instructions and then ventilate it thoroughly.

Step 2: Provide Long-Term Indoor Protection

For longer-lasting surface protection, use Effect Universal PRO ali Effect Microtech CS PRO RTU.

Both products are ready to use and are intended for surfaces where mosquitoes land or rest.

Treat:

  • window and door frames,
  • shelves,
  • room corners,
  • wall and ceiling edges,
  • garages,
  • basements,
  • verandas,
  • other places where mosquitoes frequently remain.
Effect Microtech CS PRO RTU

For the longest residual protection, use Effect Microtech CS PRO RTU. Its advanced microencapsulated formulation provides long-lasting action for up to 6 months.

Step 3: Prevent Mosquitoes from Returning

Eliminate mosquito breeding opportunities by emptying, covering or regularly changing standing water around the home.

Mosquito-Borne Viruses

In Slovenia, public-health authorities monitor mosquito-borne diseases such as West Nile fever. Asian tiger mosquitoes can transmit pathogens including chikungunya, dengue and Zika viruses in areas where these viruses are circulating. Local transmission in Slovenia remains uncommon, but travellers to other regions should check current health information before departure.

Summer Is Holiday Season - Mosquitoes May Travel with You

Before travelling, check whether your destination has an increased risk of mosquito-borne disease. Information is available from public-health authorities, travel-health clinics, tour operators and accommodation providers. Although mosquito-borne infections are uncommon in Slovenia, the risk may be significant in some destinations. Simple preventive measures can help make your holiday safer and more comfortable.

Buy Mosquito Protection Before You Travel

Mosquito protection can be as important as sun protection, particularly in areas where mosquito-borne disease occurs. Repellent will often be available at the destination, but purchasing a suitable product before departure is advisable. Products sold in Slovenia and other European Union countries are subject to strict requirements for authorised active substances and safe use. Avoid products from unverified sources and follow the label directions carefully.

Use biocides safely. Always read the label and product information before use.
