Mosquitoes – Effective Protection Against Bites
Mosquitoes are among the most irritating insects encountered during the warmer months. Their bites cause itching, redness and swelling, while their buzzing often disturbs sleep and reduces comfort at home. Mosquitoes are found in gardens, on terraces and balconies, in parks and near lakes and rivers, and they frequently enter indoor spaces as well.
In recent years, climate change and the spread of invasive species have contributed to increasing mosquito populations in Slovenia. Effective mosquito protection is therefore becoming an important part of enjoying time outdoors without unnecessary discomfort. Timely action, the removal of standing water and the use of high-quality repellents can significantly reduce their presence.
Why Are Mosquitoes a Problem?
Most people associate mosquitoes mainly with unpleasant bites, but they may also pose a health risk.
Their saliva contains substances that prevent blood from clotting, which is why a bite often causes:
- itching,
- redness,
- swelling,
- skin irritation,
- a local allergic reaction.
In more sensitive individuals, reactions may be more pronounced and can last for several days.
Although the risk of disease transmission in Slovenia is low, some invasive mosquito species transmit viral pathogens in other parts of the world. As the Asian tiger mosquito continues to spread, effective protection against bites is becoming increasingly important in Europe as well.
